The issue for Canada is clear. Under the current transport bottleneck they are receiving upwards of $20 per barrel less for their crude oil due to the transport constraints near Cushing, OK. Build a pipeline south or build a pipeline west. If it goes south two things happen. One, North Dakota oil finds a pipeline to market and producers will see from $20 to $30 more for their oil. Today this money is spent on truck and rail charges to get to market, while refineries in the region are buying this crude at a big discount. While this money is in the economy, the money really needs to be at the well head to promote more drilling in North Dakota, South Dakota and eastern Montana. By the way the North Dakota shale oil is light sweet crude the most valuable. Two, Canadian producers will receive from $10 to $20 per barrel more for their crude oil. This will encourage even more crude oil production in Canada. Every barrel of oil from Canada or North Dakota is one barrel we don't need to buy from OPEC. Who loses. Midwestern refineries. Right now they are the beneficiaries of this discounted crude oil yet they are still selling their refined products at "market" price. Once the pipeline is installed their cost of crude oil will go up, their refining margin will go down.
China doesn’t establish a long term foot hold into this large supply basin in Canada. Once a pipeline is laid to the west coast of Canada china will be a major purchaser of North American crude oil forever. China will be a major investor in Canadian crude oil production and will have more control of this valuable resource.
Canadian First Nations are trying to block oil export terminals on the BC coast. Some think it’s their way to extract money from the Alberta oil producers while a few think they want to protect their environment from the potential of a spill. As an alternative they have proposed an even more expensive route. A dual rail line from northern Alberta to Delta, Alaska and then dump the Canadian crude into the Alaska TAPS line to Valdez. These are very expensive alternatives but when you are being penalized $10 to $20 per barrel on upwards of 1 million barrels per day this is real money. Even a $12 billion rail project to the TAPS line is paid out in under 4 years. Canadians would prefer an oil line to BC, all in Canada. But Canadian First Nations want a big part of the pie even though its in Alberta so Canada is looking south. In the end it will be who blinks first. Its in the US’s best interest that the oil flow through the US. If it is an all Canadian line then China will be spending US dollars it now has to control Canadian oil.

Yes, Canada can sell its oil in the world market but it has to export from the Gulf Coast while the Gulf Coast is a major import terminal so in reality the oil will say there and less oil will be transported to the Gulf. It’s the world market and it should slightly reduce the amount of money going to OPEC. Every little bit helps.

If our Administration had an energy policy to reduce our dependence on imported oil we would be doing the same thing the US gas producers are doing to the US gas market. Ten years ago the long term view was that the US would be importing LNG to meet shortages and the price of natural gas would be governed by the “world” price of natural gas. Today the US is under $3 per million Btu. Europe is at $8 and Asia is from $12 to $16 per million Btu. Why, because of new technology and that the majority of the new gas was contained under private lands. See http://www.arcticgas.gov/The-three-worlds-of-natural-gas-prices

This is not the case with crude oil. Much of these “alternative” sources of crude oil are located under federally controlled lands out west. This is not the case in the Bakken formation. If the federal government would open all of the potential lands then in 5 to 8 years the US potentially could be importing close to zero oil. Just as in the case of natural gas the price of US oil would drop because we are not set up to be an exporter. While the rest of the world may see higher oil prices the US would see slightly lower prices.

If CO2 wasn’t the liberal poster child to end our reliance on fossil fuels then North West Alaska has over 500 billion tons of bituminous coal. Some claim the number could be as much as 3 trillion tons equal to the known world potential. Each ton of this coal produces 2 barrels of finished transport fuels. That means Alaska could contain 1 trillion barrels of supply. Changes the whole picture for the US energy supply doesn’t it.

Why are refineries shutting down on the East Coast. I heard not too long ago from someone on Bloomberg that U.S. refineries are some of the most modern in the world. What is the role of environmental regs on the closing of East coast refineries?

Good job Jacek. Keep up the good work.

To ask for unity at this time pits those who work against those who don't. Why should anyone getting handouts from the government in terms of entitlements or grants for green energy come together to solve our problems?

Corruption, Greed, and Sloth is a way of life HERE in the United States. It benefits those on the left and those on the Government dole to stay apart, protest, and then get checks.

What must happen is that right thinking Americans with American values of hard work, love of country, and a desire to get ahead vote out ALL in congress and the Administration in 2012. Then we start over with a part time Congress who gets 1/2 the pay and medical only while in Congress, who pay into Social Security while in office, and then have to go home and live under the laws they create. The corruption, greed and insider trading etc would stop in a heart beat.

Yes, let's do come together and vote all out in 2012. You with me? And NO.....the world wouldn't fall apart. Consider that nothing was done of significance last year when congress was at odds with each other and the President and the government will keep on chugging as we have a massive Federal Bureaucracy that makes it do that right now!
